This year has been exceptional for members of Bristol UOTC past and present. They have earned gold medals at the summer Olympics, a gold medal at the Army’s premiere military competition, and been awarded the Best Cadet on the latest Sandhurst Regular Commissioning Course. In order to celebrate these and our many other successes, we will be holding our Annual Dinner at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on Saturday 16 March 2013.
To hold the Dinner at our spiritual home of Sandhurst is likely to be a one-off opportunity, and we would therefore like to invite you to dine with us. I hope that this will be an opportunity for your young charges to say ‘thank you’ for the previous two decades of guidance and sacrifice that you have invested in them, to get them to fine universities, and in to the best UOTC in the land.
We are going to be dining in some truly magnificent surroundings steeped in history, so to ensure you get the most out of the evening, the staff of Sandhurst will give a short presentation at 1830 hours on the history and current role of the Academy. We will also be inviting a few high achieving guests from the military and other fields, that have connections to Bristol, Bath or OTC to enliven the evening for you.
I have tried to constrain the cost and subsidise the dinner as much as possible, but in these austere times, we will have to charge £50 per person. FAQs
Why is the dinner at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst?
We have uniquely been invited to hold our dinner there by the Commandant of RMAS, Major General Tim Evans - no other OTC has ever had an Annual Dinner there.
RMA Sandhurst is the spiritual home of all OTCs and Officer Cadets. It is a hugely impressive building, and the dinner gives us the opportunity to introduce every OCdt to the place, its people, and its ways. The day will hopefully break down some of the myths and legends about the place. You may even choose to go there for a 3 week or year long course once you have enjoyed their hospitality!
Why am I inviting my Guardian to an OTC regimental dinner?
This could be a rare or unique opportunity for you to say 'thank you' to the most important person in your life so far. For 20 odd years they have grafted to help you, and this should be an ideal opportunity to show how much you appreciate that help, and show them something of what you have achieved in the OTC and at university.
Who is my 'Guardian'?
It is difficult to say who is anyone's guardian. For most it will be one of your parents, though for some it may be a grandparent, or aunt or uncle; for some it may be a much elder brother or sister. I leave it to you to decide but the litmus test is whether the have been the person who has got you where you are today - at one of the best universities, and in the best OTC in the land.
How many Guardians can I bring?
We are constrained by numbers in the Old College reception rooms. Every OCdt is entitled to bring one guardian. If you would like to bring two (both parents say), then please purchase a ticket and if there is excess demand, then we will allocate on a first-come, first-served. Amy will inform you of this immediately after 16 Jan 13.
When do I have to respond?
To guarantee yourself a place at the dinner for you and your guardian, need to have purchased tickets by Wednesday 16 January.
Who else will be there?
So that your parents don't have to listen to your MOD1 and Cambrian stories all night, we have invited a number of high achieving individuals from the military, sports, arts and entertainment, and the judiciary etc that have either a link to Bristol, Bath, or OTC, and should help make it a memorable evening for you and your parents.
What will I be doing that day?
The OCdts will travel up to RMAS in the morning, spend the afternoon getting to see the Academy, its staff, and cadets from the inside. There will be a presentation on the Academy and the courses it runs, then a round robin or the high wire course, and other military skills and drills that justifies a day's pay for a slap up meal. In the evening you will meet up for a black tie dinner much like the Autumn Dinner of last week - but a bit posher as we are in the hallowed surroundings of RMAS.
What will they do on the night?
Your parent/guardian will arrive at the Academy in the evening in their black tie finery, be given a short briefing on the role and activities of the OTC and RMAS, and then join you for the dinner.
Do I have to stay overnight at RMAS?
No, if your parents are generous enough to get you a hotel room for the night then crack on.
Can I stay the night at RMAS?
Most of the Cadets will travel by coach from Bristol to RMAS, stay in their single bed accommodation and then return to Bristol by coach on Sunday morning.
What do I and my parents have to wear?
The same dress guidance as for the Autumn Dinner will be used - for men a black tie dinner suit or Mess Kit if you have it, and for ladies, Mess Kit or frocks below the knee, though since Sandhurst is such an impressive setting, you may wish to be slightly more formal.
How posh and strict will it be?
All dinners are supposed to be enjoyed by both the hosts and the guests, so even though we will be in the finery of the Old College, I hope that it will be as relaxed as a dinner party allowing all the guardians and officer cadets to enjoy the company, the surroundings and the evening.
How much will it cost?
To keep things simple everyone (Cadets and Guardians) will pay £50, and every OCdt will get one day's pay for the event. The OTC and other funds have subsidised this to be as low as possible whilst delivering a top notch evening.
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
You will need to bring the formal invitation and some form of ID to gain entry to the Academy on the evening.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
You will be able to park your car in the Academy near to the Old College, disabled guests will be able to drive up to the building.
